What is Malaria?
- Malaria is a dangerous disease caused by Plasmodium sp. (P. falciparum, P. malariae, P. ovale and P. vivax) a protozoan microorganism.
- The malaria parasite is transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes, which bite mainly between dusk and dawn.
- Symptoms are chills, fever and sweating, usually occurring a few weeks after being bitten.
People may experience:
- Pain areas: in the abdomen or muscles
- Whole-body: chills, fatigue, fever, night sweats, shivering, or sweating
- Gastrointestinal: diarrhoea, nausea, or vomiting
- Also common: fast heart rate, headache, mental confusion, or pallor
Why Malaria is Dangerous?
- Malaria can cause high fever, chills, and flu-like symptoms that can be life-threatening when not treated quickly.
- Once malaria-causing Plasmodium parasites enter your body through the bite of a female Anopheles mosquito, they travel to your liver, where they multiply. They invade your red blood cells, which are important cells in your blood that carry oxygen. The parasites get inside them, lay their eggs, and multiply until the red blood cell bursts.
- This releases more parasites into your bloodstream. As they attack more of your healthy red blood cells, this infection can make you feel very sick.
-
The most severe form is caused by P. falciparum; variable clinical
features include fever, chills, headache, muscular aching and weakness,
vomiting, cough, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Other symptoms related to
organ failure may supervene, such as acute renal failure, pulmonary
oedema, generalized convulsions, circulatory collapse, followed by coma
and death. The initial symptoms, which may be mild, may not be easy to
recognize as being due to malaria.
How to get rid of Malaria?
- People travelling to areas where malaria is common typically take protective drugs before, during and after their trip. Treatment includes antimalarial drugs.
- Avoid Mosquito Bites.
Life Cycle of Plasmodium
- It is more important to know about the lifecycle of plasmodium because it is very important to know that for normal to educative purposes
- Here is a short video to know that cycle easily
- First, the liver cell is get infected by sporozoites of plasmodium from the saliva of the mosquito.
